Gary Lineker mocks Newcastle after Alan Shearer makes summer transfer claim

BBC pundits Micah Richards and Gary Lineker couldn’t resist taking a dig at Alan Shearer’s beloved Newcastle United when discussing James Ward Prowse’s future.

The Southampton captain has been in fine form this season and he will be hoping to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

The trio of pundits were discussing who the Premier League’s greatest ever set-piece specialists were in the latest Match of the Day: Top 10 episode.

Ward-Prowse’s name was inevitably involved in the discussion given his prowess from dead ball situations.

Following his free-kick against Leeds United on Saturday, the 27-year-old moved above Thierry Henry into second place in the most direct free-kicks scored in Premier League history chart.

The strike against the Whites was Ward-Prowse’s 13th goal via a free-kick in the top-fight and only David Beckham (18) has scored more.

Match of the Day host Lineker asked Richards and Shearer whether they were surprised that none of the Premier League’s big clubs had tried to lure him away from the St Mary’s Stadium.

Richards responded: “Yes, I am surprised actually.”

The Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer felt that Ward-Prowse’s current form could result in bigger clubs going for him in the summer.

This prompted Lineker to make a tongue in cheek reference to Shearer’s St James’ Park connections.

Lineker said: “Oh hello, got a bit of inside information have you? I said big clubs though.”

Former Manchester City defender couldn’t resist making his own dig after Lineker set up the opportunity perfectly for him.

Richards said: “He didn’t say rich owners!”

As was reported by The Athletic over the summer, Aston Villa lodged an official bid to sign the playmaker. However, the move never materialised.
