It is no secret how highly Match of the Day host Gary Lineker rates Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Rarely does a game go by that the former striker does not take to Twitter to shower the 21-year-old with compliments.

It is fair to say Alexander-Arnold is deserving of the praise, having developed into a truly top-class full-back.

The star’s current level after a rapid rise is actually remarkable, and fans of both Liverpool and England should be excited about just how good he could possibly get, with his peak still some six or seven years away.

In the eyes of Lineker, Alexander-Arnold is on track to become the very best of all Liverpool’s current superstars.

He said in an interview with The Guardian: “Trent [Alexander-Arnold] came through the academy and he’s going to be the best of the lot.

“They’ve got lots of special players, particularly up front with the big three. But Trent is very special.

“He’s one of those players I watch every game and see three or four things from him that I go: ‘Oh my God’.

TBR’s view – Trent’s defending key to true greatness

So far in his career, Alexander-Arnold has made a name for himself as playing like a midfielder at right-back.

He has exceptional technical qualities and a very rare passing range.

It has undoubtedly helped him to stand out, but if he could just bring the defensive side of his game to the same level, then he’d really be on the way to becoming an incredible player.

Alexander-Arnold’s potential is scary, and the sooner he improves on his defending, which is by no means poor, then he really could surpass the levels of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk when he hits his peak.
