Jose Mourinho is coming under increasing scrutiny after a third successive Premier League defeat, this time to Chelsea on Thursday night, and Gary Lineker has jokingly suggested a replacement for the Portuguese manager on Twitter.
Spurs have seemingly failed to recover from a last-minute winner from Roberto Firmino at Anfield earlier in the season – winning just two of the eight Premier League games they have played since Firmino bulleted a header past Hugo Lloris.
Although they have reached a Cup final, where they face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup in April, Spurs are struggling in the league. They have slipped to eighth, having sat at the top of the Premier League for a spell.
Mourinho is under pressure, especially given his negative style of play and ex-Tottenham striker Lineker has jokingly suggested a replacement for the Special One – in the form of recently-sacked Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.
TBR’s view – Is Mourinho nearing the end?
No chance, and that is because there is still a possibility of not just the one trophy – but three. A top-four finish is also achievable given Harry Kane is expected to return to action next week. Spurs are still capable of having an excellent season.
Yes, recent results have been poor but of those three successive losses, two have been against an in-form Chelsea and the Champions, Liverpool. Mourinho gets criticism because Spurs fans want an attractive style of play.
But until Tottenham fans realise that their defence is not good enough to be trusted to allow the midfielders and attackers to impose that style of play – criticism will always continue to come in for Mourinho. The manager has time.
