Aston Villa finally saw off the challenge of West Bromwich Albion by winning on penalties after the two sides drew 2-2 after two legs – and two Aston Villa stars were praised by Gary Lineker and Mark Bosnich.
Going into the match at the Hawthorns, Villa held a 2-1 advantage but Craig Dawson’s first-half header made it equal on aggregate. Chris Brunt was sent off in the 79th minute, leaving West Brom to defend for their lives.
Indeed, they held on throughout extra time, giving them a chance of winning through penalties. But Mason Holgate and Ahmed Hegazi missed for the Baggies, both saved by goalkeeper Jed Steer.
Steer was given praise by former Villa stopper Bosnich on Twitter, while Lineker heaped the plaudits on to Villa captain Grealish for his performance in the middle of the park – despite Villa losing 1-0 on the night to West Brom.
Not hard to see why @JackGrealish1 is attracting attention. Really comfortable on the ball with a silky touch. Easily the best footballer on the pitch.

Super from all the Villa and @JedSteer special…xmb

For Grealish, it is obvious that the playmaker is going to be a big player in the Premier League for years to come. Whether that is with Villa, remains to be seen.
But for Steer, it is proper fairytale stuff. The goalkeeper has had to be incredibly patient and wait for his chance to shine for Villa, and was even loaned out to Charlton Athletic during the first half of the season.
Now, it is Steer’s time. His saves were excellent in the shootout and his form under Dean Smith has been superb. It remains to be seen if he will keep out Lovre Kalinic when the Croatian returns from injury.
