Gary Lineker discusses what Tottenham need to mount a Premier League title challenge

Gary Lineker has told Laura Woods’ TalkSPORT Breakfast Show on Monday (09:25am) that he believes Tottenham Hotspur are “four or five players” away from matching Liverpool and mounting a Premier League title challenge.

Tottenham currently sit in eighth place and a massive seven points behind fourth-placed Chelsea – despite reaching last season’s Champions League final. It is a far cry from the team that pushed Leicester City all the way in 2015-16.

This season has been such a disappointment that even fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked and replaced with Jose Mourinho – who is yet to win the supporters over. A number of injuries, including Kane, has had a detrimental effect.

Tottenham icon and Match of the Day presenter Lineker was asked about Kane’s comments over his future, and claimed the England captain could leave Spurs given that they are “four or five players” away from rivalling Liverpool.

“He’s been very honest. Every player wants to win things in their career, but it would be unthinkable for a player of Kane’s stature that he didn’t win anything. You can’t criticise him too much. He might well stay there,” Lineker said.

“They are four or five players short of matching the likes of Liverpool and challenging for a title.”

TBR’s view – What do Tottenham need this summer?

First of all, Tottenham need a goalkeeper of title-winning standard. Hugo Lloris was that player, but mistakes have crept in. Ajax’s Andre Onana is ideal. Less of a liability at right-back, and a replacement for Danny Rose should also be considered.

Tanguy Ndombele was supposed to replace Mousa Dembele and he has struggled. Tottenham need a Dembele-like player, and back-up for Harry Kane. Five crucial areas that need improving if Spurs are to match the likes of Liverpool.
