Gary Lineker has congratulated Aston Villa following their impressive victory on Tuesday night as the Premier League relegation battle goes right down to the wire.
Dean Smith’s charges hosted Arsenal at Villa Park, a tall order considering Mikel Arteta’s charges had beaten Manchester City and Liverpool in their last two games in all competitions.
However, Villa were hoping to make it three games unbeaten – they weren’t far off beating Everton too but for a late goal – and put in a gargantuan effort against the Emirates Stadium side.
The hosts took the lead in the 27th minute through Trezeguet, who rifled a powerful effort beyond the reach of Emiliano Martinez from Conor Hourihane’s dangerous corner.
Combined with Watford’s heavy loss to Manchester City, Villa are now not only out of the bottom three but have a slightly better goal difference than their relegation rivals.
Sunday will see Villa head to West Ham, who aren’t mathematically safe but have a much better goal difference than the sides below them and face Manchester United tonight.
Watford, meanwhile, head to Arsenal, who’ll want to finish the season on a high after their latest setback.
And Lineker, who hailed Villa’s “fabulous” effort against the Gunners, is looking forward to what this weekend will bring:
Enormous win and fabulous effort from @AVFCOfficial. Out of the bottom 3 with one game to go. Bums could not be squeakier going into the last day.

Norwich City have already been relegated, while Bournemouth are three points behind Villa and Watford, but still have a chance of survival if they beat Everton and their relegation rivals both lose.
