Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League on Thursday night and Gary Lineker was left baffled by the Gunners’ exit.
Mikel Arteta’s charges took a slender 1-0 lead into the last-32 second leg at the Emirates Stadium as Olympiakos came to town.
Arsenal were taken to extra time by Pape Abou Cisse’s goal early in the second half which levelled the tie.
However, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s overhead kick in the 113th minute seemed to have nudged the Gunners into the next round.
As extra time entered its latter stages, Arsenal conceded again, this time through the unmarked Youssef El Arabi’s effort.
To add insult to injury, the player who had scored for the Gunners and has effectively carried them for much of the season then spurned a gilt-edged opportunity to score late on.
Here is what Lineker said about the game on Twitter:
TBR View:
Arteta may have done well with Arsenal so far but it’s clear that there’s still a lot of work to do at both ends of the pitch.
Given the ease in which Olympiakos scored their first, and the fact Arsenal conceded another late, late goal, the back must – and surely will – be bolstered in the summer.
Likewise, the front line lacked cutting edge for much of the game, struggling to break down their opponents and being wasteful in front of goal.
