Gary Lineker has declared himself delighted with an eight-word verdict after Brendan Rodgers ruled himself out of the Newcastle running.

Rodgers, 48, has been strongly linked with the Newcastle job. The Leicester boss is often one of the first names to be considered when a big job appears.

But reports emerged this week that Rodgers is not interested. The Mail claim that that is because he is waiting to replace Pep Guardiola at Man City.

Guardiola has a contract at City until the summer of 2023, and Rodgers is said to be admired at The Etihad. He is apparently waiting for that.

Rodgers told his press conference – as per the Leicester Mercury – that he is “100%” remaining at Leicester, when asked about the Newcastle reports.

Lineker, a well-known Leicester fan having played for the club during his playing career, reacted to Rodgers’ comments with an eight-word verdict.

Lineker on Rodgers: Newcastle too soon for calibre of Leicester boss

Three years down the line when Newcastle, inevitably, will be in the Europa League, challenging for the top four – that is when Rodgers comes into play.

But right now, Newcastle need a manager that can get the best out of their current players and help pick the right signings in the January window.

The right moves that will get them out of a relegation scrap. They currently sit in 19th place, without a win from seven Premier League matches.

Rodgers is not the man. He is above that, widely considered the best British manager about. But in a few years, he could be more suited.
