Gary Lineker defends Aston Villa in disallowed goal debate

Aston Villa lost 1-0 at Crystal Palace yesterday but will rightly feel aggrieved at the way in which they were denied a late equaliser. Indeed, even Match of the Day presenter and former England striker Gary Lineker felt bad for them.

Henri Lansbury fired home what looked to be a perfectly good equaliser after former Villa striker Jordan Ayew had earlier given the Eagles the lead.

However, referee Kevin Friend had already blown his whistle for an apparent dive from Jack Grealish. Lucky enough, VAR exists now. On second look, it seems Grealish was tripped and certainly did not dive at all. With that in mind, the decision could have easily been overturned and the goal awarded to Aston Villa.

Unfortunately for Villa that was not the case, as the officials remained stubborn with their initial decision standing.

It was a move that left Lineker bewildered on Twitter and Aston Villa fans seething online.

Indeed, even Grealish took to Twitter to air his grievances at what looks a poor decision on all counts.

Once again, it appears VAR is not being utilised to its full potential due to a complete lack of common sense.

Aston Villa, on this occasion, have paid the price.
