Garth Crooks says Premier League captain is a ready-made Liverpool player
Back in March, Garth Crooks urged Liverpool to replace soon-to-be free agent Gini Wijnaldum with Southampton captain James Ward-Prowse and after the weekend, Crooks has claimed that Ward-Prowse is already ready-made for the Reds.
Ward-Prowse, 26, has been a rare shining light in a very poor second half to the Premier League campaign. While Southampton have failed to replicate their early form, Ward-Prowse continues to shine – and has helped the Saints win their last two games.
Having beaten Crystal Palace 3-1 after a dismal run of five defeats in seven beforehand, the England star was on hand again to lay on his 15th goal involvement of the Premier League season with a 3-1 win over Fulham. He has eight goals and seven assists.
Crooks claimed more than two months ago that “I can’t think of a better replacement than Ward-Prowse,” when discussing Wijnaldum’s future. Now, he has suggested that the Saints midfielder is already the perfect Liverpool-type player.
“Ward-Prowse, in my opinion, has been Southampton’s player of the season. They will do well to keep him. He’s a Liverpool player if ever I saw one,” Crooks said, following his performance during the win over Fulham.
TBR’s view – Ward-Prowse would be a stunning signing for Liverpool
But if Southampton lose him, it will be an enormous blow. The Saints are set for what could be a really bad summer. Danny Ings is likely to move given his contract situation and Ward-Prowse could certainly follow him in the coming months.
If Liverpool can get him for a fee in the region of £40million, then it is good business but any more than that figure and the Reds are overpaying. It completely depends on Ward-Prowse, does he want to go this summer? He might well do.
