Garth Crooks has told his BBC Sport column that Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold is good enough to play for Real Madrid. Crooks named Alexander-Arnold in his Team of the Year, after a brilliant 2021.

It is incredible to think that Alexander-Arnold only turned 23 in October. The England ace is just one game shy of reaching 200 in all competitions for Liverpool – and has been touted as a future captain for the Reds.

This season, the 16-time England star has been superb. While Liverpool are now nine points behind Manchester City, Alexander-Arnold already has 11 assists – two more than last term. He has also scored two goals.

Without a doubt, he is up there with the likes of Reece James and Joao Cancelo when it comes to the best right-sided defenders in the Premier League. Crooks thinks he is good enough to play for Madrid, but why would he leave?

“This kid is good enough to play for Real Madrid, never mind Liverpool, and he makes my team for the second consecutive year,” Crooks said, in his BBC Sport Team of the Season column on Thursday evening.

Crooks on Alexander-Arnold: Why would Liverpool man join Madrid?

Alexander-Arnold is currently playing for his boyhood club – not only his boyhood club, but one of the top three teams in European football. Along with Manchester City and probably Bayern Munich, Liverpool are one of the best.

The £180,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender is at the perfect club, close to iconic status. A few more years, and he could easily be wearing the armband. Alexander-Arnold is good enough to play for Madrid, but why would he want to?
