Garth Crooks has claimed in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column that he would rather have Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish in his side than Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Dele Alli, as well as Leicester City’s James Maddison.
Grealish, 24, took his tally for the season to nine goals as Villa earned a point away at Brighton. He has had a hand in 15 strikes this season, laying on six assists for Dean Smith’s side – earning plenty of plaudits as he continues his excellent form.
The Villa skipper is expected to finally be given a chance to play for England in March, as he continues to give Villa fans hope of Premier League survival. His goal against Brighton was the only bit of magic in what was a dull 1-1 draw.
Crooks has claimed he would rather Villa’s number 10 in his side than England regular Alli who has been in an out of form for Tottenham this season. Crooks also reckons Grealish is a better player than Leicester playmaker Maddison.
“What I want to know is when is Grealish going to be spoken about in international terms? Between Dele Alli, James Maddison and Grealish I’m having Grealish every time,” Crooks said.
“Come on Gareth Southgate – start giving this lad some encouragement and the occasional mention in the press.”
TBR’s view – Who is the best of the three and on their way to Euro 2020?
Right now, there is no doubt that Grealish is in the best form. He is scoring goals, creating them and keeping Aston Villa in with a shout of surviving Premier League relegation. But that is for his boyhood club, where he is the best player.
Without that affection and surrounded by a team of much better players on his level, would Grealish shine as much as he has done for Villa – but in England shirt? It remains to be seen.
Maddison has gone missing of late and although Alli has proven he can hack it at the top level, he is stuttering into form. Grealish should be on the plane, perhaps along with Alli.
