Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Dele Alli is close to being back at his best after scoring a sensational brace for Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon, as Spurs scraped past Bournemouth with a 3-2 win.
Tottenham secured all three points in what was a very similar result to Jose Mourinho’s opening game against West Ham. Spurs looked to be cruising at 3-0, before conceding a brace to Harry Wilson – including a very smart free-kick.
But Spurs did enough to hold on, with Alli’s goals proving to be vital while Moussa Sissoko’s volley was the winner. It has seen Alli continue his stunning form following the arrival of Mourinho – scoring three goals and an assist in three games.
Alli has produced multiple man-of-the-match performances over the course of last two weeks, and Mourinho will be hoping he continues to do so at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. Former Spurs star Crooks raved over Alli’s improved form.
“The mere fact that Alli has appeared in my team of the week in consecutive weeks and had a memorable match in midweek against Olympiakos tells its own story,” Crooks said. “It looks like the kid is back.
“Every time he receives the ball it feels like something is about to happen. That feeling has been absent in his game for some time. Against Bournemouth, he should have had a hat-trick and would have done if he was at his very best, so there is still some work for him to do.
“It does look like Mourinho is starting to have an effect.”
TBR’s view – Alli’s improved form is perfect timing, for England
His previously woeful form had seen him earn enormous criticism from the Sky Sports punditry team and even Gareth Southgate had dropped him from England’s side. The former MK Dons star was really struggling.
But miraculously, it is a completely different story now. If Alli is in top form, he goes to Euro 2020 purely because of his experience on the international stage. He has 37 England caps, more than the likes of Mason Mount, James Maddison and Jack Grealish combined.
It is perfect timing, but Alli must continue to shine.
