Garth Crooks raves about Romain Saiss as Wolves beat Sheffield United

The 39-cap Morrocan international was in superb form at Bramall Lane.

Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he was impressed with Wolves defender Romain Saiss after the defender netted in yesterday’s 2-0 win over Sheffield United.

Two of last season’s surprise packages met in South Yorkshire and goals from Raul Jimenez and Saiss in the first 10 minutes saw them leave with three points.

Saiss played 49 times for Wolves last season and looks like being a big player once more during 2020/21.

Crooks was certainly impressed with his opening day showing, naming him at centre-back in his Team of the Week, alongside Arsenal ace Gabriel.

He told BBC Sport: “This was an outstanding performance by Wolves – and in particular Roman Saiss – at Sheffield United on Monday.

“The Moroccan defender scored a fabulous header and had another flash by the post with Aaron Ramsdale beaten.

“He then joined a breakaway attack and forced the Sheffield United keeper to push a terrific shot on to the post – before heading off the line at the other end to deny the Blades a certain goal.”

Saiss has proved something of a stalwart for Wolves since arriving in 2016 from Le Havre for an undisclosed fee.

The defender has played 144 times for the West Midlands-based outfit and looks undroppable at the moment.

He’s a solid part of Espirito Santo’s plans and last season helped Wolves reach the quarter-final of the Europa League.

Some have questioned whether their participation in Europe last season might hamper their progress this time around.

Based on their showing at Bramall Lane there looks to be no hangover and Wolves can be a force once again this season.
