Garth Crooks has named Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold in his Team of the Week on the BBC website for his performance in a 2-1 win over Sheffield United.

The defender put in a typically sound display, highlight once again the superb range of passing which he has in his armoury.

Alexander-Arnold claimed 15 assists last season despite playing at right-back and although he’s not kicked on in that sense just yet, the signs are positive.

Liverpool beat the Blades thanks to goals from Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota and Crooks was quick to rave about Alexander-Arnold.

He told BBC Sport: “The youngster was at it again on Saturday and Sheffield United. Spraying balls around the pitch with that wonderful right foot of his like he was handing out leaflets at a conference party.

“The pass for Mohamed Salah to score – only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside – was so effortless and absolutely gorgeous. It didn’t just split the Sheffield United defence in two, it literally dissected it.”

Liverpool haven’t really scaled the heights which they did last season just yet but beating Sheffield United from behind will give them confidence.

With Virgil van Dijk out injured, Jurgen Klopp’s charges must show togetherness like never before.

Alexander-Arnold, along with Andy Robertson at left-back, is vitally important to how the Reds play and it looks like being another big season for the defender.

The youngster earns £100,000-a-week at Anfield and whilst the attacking talent typically take the plaudits, Alexander-Arnold’s importance shouldn’t be underestimated.

His array of passing would make some midfielders feel small and the attackers clearly relish seeing the right-back in the team on a regular basis.
