BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks heaped praise on Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips for his performance in the 1-0 win over Everton at the weekend – backing the youngster as a replacement for Jordan Henderson at Liverpool.
The 24-year-old who is born and bred in Leeds was once again in solid form as the Whites continued their decent start to the 2020/21 campaign.
Marcelo Bielsa has stuck to his guns after winning promotion to the top-flight last season and Raphinha’s first Leeds goal earned his team another eye-catching win at Goodison Park.
Phillips has broken into the England squad this season and Crooks thinks he is the ideal successor for Henderson for the Three Lions – and for Liverpool!
The central midfielder was named in Crooks’ Team of the Week and after his sound performance, he backed him for greatness for club and country.
He wrote on the BBC Sport website: “This kid reminds me of a young Bryan Robson when the former Manchester United and England captain played for West Brom.
“Phillips can cover the ground, he’s not afraid to stick his foot in, and sees the pass. He doesn’t immediately grab your attention but given time you begin to realise the enormous contribution he’s making to the game.
“I think he’s the perfect replacement for Jordan Henderson and I don’t mean just for England.”
TBR View – Phillips set for future stardom
As a devoted Leeds fan growing up, Phillips will be living the dream right now by playing week in and week out for his boyhood club.
He has risen through the ranks at Elland Road, taking to Premier League football like a duck to water.
Despite that, the future looks bright. On current form, it’s easy to see Phillips playing for a top, top European club – and why not Liverpool?
His tenacity and eye to pick a pass quickly would make him a quality signing for Liverpool. He’d also slot into Jurgen Klopp’s system seamlessly.
Henderson is only 30 but at some point, the time will come to scour the market for a replacement.
The £140,000-a-week captain is like a more mature, rounded and experienced version of Phillips.
With that in mind, it’ll be very interesting to see if the Premier League champions will try and target the Leeds star when the time comes to replace Henderson.
