BBC pundit Garth Crooks has raved about Arsenal winger Willian for his display in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
The 32-year-old has endured a tough maiden campaign at the Emirates Stadium but registered an assist on Sunday to offer a reminder of his quality.
Willian hadn’t registered an assist since the opening day of the season before Sunday and Mikel Arteta will be delighted.
The ex-Chelsea man was handed a lucrative contract worth £192,000-a-week back in the summer and he’s failed to justify such a salary.
Crooks was impressed with him on Sunday though and named him in his BBC Sport Team of the Week.
He said: “To be out of the team for such long periods and to come back into the Arsenal side and perform so well against an in-form Leicester was impressive.
“Willian has struggled since his arrival although he did make my Team of the Week after an impressive debut against Fulham in the opening game of the season.”
TBR View – Willian can still prove a decent addition to Arsenal ranks
Some Arsenal fans didn’t feel that Willian was required when he signed in the summer and his form hasn’t been great.
Now he is on the books, however, Arteta might as well utilise him as a member of his squad.
On Sunday he highlighted that he can still do a job for the club if called upon and it should give him plenty of confidence.
With 70 caps for his country, he’s vastly experienced and that could prove useful to the younger players in Arteta’s dressing room.
Willian still has work to do to win over his fiercest critics but Sunday’s performance represents a strong start.
