Garth Crooks has hailed the quality of Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, who he’s suggested could possibly be their player of the season.
Sigurdsson, who earns £100,000-a-week (Spotrac) at Goodison Park, is in his fourth campaign with the Merseyside club.
The 31-year-old is an attacking midfielder that on his day is a top-class talent, which is why the Toffees shelled out £45million (BBC) to sign him from Swansea City back in 2017.
However, he still divides opinion with the fanbase due to his inconsistency.
The Icelandic playmaker has contributed superbly so far this season though, scoring eight goals and supplying nine assists in 37 games across all competitions.
BBC pundit Crooks raved about Sigurdsson after naming him in his latest team of the week segment for his two-goals display in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham last Friday.
He’s even suggested that perhaps he’s maturing under manager Carlo Ancelotti. It’s worth pointing out though that the player has got so much experience to fall back on, and is coming off the back of a superb individual display.
“Two outstanding finishes from Gylfi Sigurdsson [against Spurs] and the same from Harry Kane really made the game worth watching. Sigurdsson has made my TOTW on an number of occasions and has arguably been Everton’s player of the season,” Crooks told BBC Sport.
“I certainly can’t remember when I’ve seen him play better. He was impressive at Swansea, where he made his name, struggled at Spurs but really matured under Carlo Ancelotti. He strikes a beautiful ball and was a thorn in Tottenham’s side all evening. Sigurdsson’s has really found himself at Everton.”

TBR’s View:
If you’re looking at Everton’s player of the season, it might be slightly generous to put Sigurdsson into the mix as one of the top contenders.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ben Godfrey and James Rodriguez are the names of players that initially spring to mind when discussing the club award.
Sigurdsson has proven his worth to Ancelotti’s squad though, as when he’s on form he can link up play effectively and provide an extra goal threat to help ease the load off the forwards.
The key for him now though is repeating it every week.
