BBC Sport pundit has named Ezri Konsa as one of two bright sparks in Aston Villa’s win over Sheffield United, naming him in his Team of the Week.
The central defender saw his header loop into the corner of Aaron Ramsdale’s goal to help Villa off to a flying start in the Premier League.
In truth, it was a poor game, however, but Crooks felt that the 22-year-old did well against the Blades.
He told BBC Sport: “Aston Villa v Sheffield United was almost a carbon copy of the first match after lockdown. That fixture was deadly dull and the game on Monday was only marginally better.
“However, there were two bright sparks in this game. One was Tyrone Mings who provided the assist for Villa’s winner, and the other was Ezri Konsa, who rose beautifully above Enda Stevens to direct his header past the goalkeeper.”
Konsa was added to Dean Smith’s ranks in the summer of 2019 from Brentford for £12 million (BBC).
During his maiden campaign playing Premier League football he got better as the season progressed, featuring 31 times in all competitions.
Konsa looks like being one for the future and he’s building up a decent rapport with Mings at the back.
Perhaps cruelly the ex-Brentford player was dropped for the Carabao Cup Final last season, despite playing in every game leading up to it.
That clearly acted as a motivation for Konsa as following the restart he was in fine form, scoring a crucial goal against Everton.
He was impressive in helping the Villans to a clean sheet last night and his matchwinning goal will have done his confidence the world of good.
