Garth Crooks praises Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s display at Newcastle

BBC pundit and former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks doesn’t think there will be a better lone striker’s performance than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s against Newcastle yesterday.

In his BBC Team of the Week column, Crooks was effusive in his praise of the Arsenal hitman, who netted the only goal in the 1-0 victory at St James’ Park.

He said: “I don’t think you will see a better display from a player asked to lead the line on his own over the rest of the season. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was outstanding against Newcastle.

“Apart from Mesut Ozil, Arsenal no longer possess the quality of player who can thread a ball through the eye of a needle so, on the odd occasion, when that quality does appear Aubameyang has to be equal to it and he was.”

TBR’s View – Surely too early to make such a bold claim

Aubameyang showed his class yesterday as Arsenal displayed grit that was too often missing in their away performances last season.

But to call it on week one as unbeatable as a lone striker’s performance all season? That’s too far, and Crooks has wasted no time in getting into the hyperbole he so often shows in his team of the week selections.

Perhaps as a former Tottenham man, he’s trying to show even-handedness and praising an Arsenal player where it’s due. Aubameyang was extremely good, but Crooks’ claim is wild at this stage of the season.
