Garth Crooks makes claim about Aston Villa star Emi Martinez
Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he would name Emi Martinez as Aston Villa’s player of the season, as he picked the goalkeeper in his team of the week.
Villa fans being able to reflect on a clean sheet has been a regular occurrence this season. And Martinez kept his 14th of the campaign at the weekend as Dean Smith’s men secured a point against Wolves.
The 28-year-old was called upon on a few occasions during the stalemate. One save he made from Conor Coady was arguably nothing short of outrageous.
And Crooks suggested that the Argentinian is the standout performer from what has been a remarkable campaign from the Villans.
“When your two centre-backs turn to their goalkeeper and hug him in response to a save, you can bet your bottom dollar that it’s the turning point in the game,” he told BBC Sport.
“Wolves should have won this game based on the chance that presented itself to Conor Coady. The Wolves captain isn’t renowned for his clinical finishing but even he’s entitled to score a goal when in the six-yard box, unopposed with only the goalkeeper to beat.
“Enter Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper has been outstanding and, in my view, Aston Villa’s player of the season.”
It is a big claim to suggest that Martinez is Villa’s player of the season. Admittedly, it is one that fans could hardly disagree with that strongly.
But Jack Grealish appears to have taken his game to another level this season. And his recent absence has helped highlight just how influential he is when he is playing.
Meanwhile, the likes of Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Matt Targett and Ollie Watkins deserve nothing but plaudits for what they have done this season.
There are several contenders. But as Crooks suggests, no player has probably staked a stronger claim than Martinez.
