Garth Crooks has heaped praise on Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin for his matchwinning performance against Southampton on Saturday (BBC).

The Frenchman came up trumps to fire home the winner at St Mary’s Stadium and Crooks raved about his performance.

Saint-Maximin signed for the Magpies for £16.5 million from Nice during the summer, already becoming a firm fan favourite at the club.

His goal at the weekend was his third in a Newcastle shirt and Crooks was impressed.

He told BBC Sport: “This lad terrorised Southampton. The Saints simply couldn’t cope with his pace.

“While Saint-Maximin was carving his way through the Southampton defence, Dwight Gayle was missing chances set up by the Frenchman with alarming regularity.

“In the end, Saint-Maximin decided to it all himself and created his own chance…and converted it – aided by Southampton’s Yan Valery.”

The 22-year-old has looked like a really shrewd piece of business by Newcastle.

With Joelinton struggling to live up to his £40 million price tag, Saint-Maximin has made a complete mockery of the money the club paid for him.

The winger who can play on either side is rapid, boasting an array of skills and a determination to work hard at both ends of the pitch.

Newcastle must use Saint-Maximin’s signing as a benchmark for future signings into the club.

Newcastle aren’t known for spending large amounts frequently and they can’t afford to sign another Joelinton in the summer.
