Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that Jordan Pickford saved Everton on Friday as he named the Toffees goalkeeper in his Team of the Week.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men got back to winning ways at the Emirates after six games without a victory. Richarlison’s cross was turned in by Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno for the only goal.

It proved to be the winner as Pickford made a couple of superb saves to keep the Gunners at bay.

The 27-year-old has been impressive in more recent times. And Crooks suggested that he deserved a lot of credit for the display he produced in North London last week.

“He’s not my favourite goalkeeper by any means but credit where credit’s due – he saved Everton against Arsenal,” he told BBC Sport.

“Two important saves by Pickford, the first from Dani Ceballos and the second from Gabriel Martinelli keeps Everton in the hunt for a Europa League place.”

Pickford has come in for a lot of criticism during his time at Goodison Park. On his day, he is unquestionably one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

However, he has been guilty of mistakes and making rash decision in the past. There have been times when some supporters have wondered whether Robin Olsen should get a run in the side.

It would be huge for the Toffees if Pickford can become more consistent and more reliable.

Everton still have an opportunity achieve something special this season. And Pickford entering a purple patch of form for the final handful of games would make a massive difference.
