Jonjo Shelvey returned to the Newcastle United starting XI this weekend, and made the most of his chance against West Ham United.
The playmaker has had to get used to the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks, with Steve Bruce preferring the likes of Isaac Hayden and the Longstaff brothers in midfield.

Shelvey was recalled for the trip to the Hammers though, and the Magpies appeared to benefit from having him in the side.
The Toon Army won 3-2, with the 27-year-old helping himself to his first goal of the season from a free-kick.
Shelvey had a great game for the visitors, and Crooks was left impressed.
The BBC Sport pundit said after picking him in his Team of the Week (BBC Sport): “This player will look back on his career and genuinely wonder why he never won more caps for England.

“On his day he can be as good as any midfield player in the country, but his fitness levels have always been a cause for concern along with the potential to cause mischief.
“Against West Ham, Shelvey demonstrated just how effective he can be on the ball.”
TBR’s view – Shelvey has to play
Newcastle look a much better side with Shelvey pulling the strings from deep.

He has the ability to makes things happen for the Magpies and get the likes of Miguel Almiron and Joelinton firing.
It’s only a question of fitness with Shelvey – in terms of ability on the ball, few in the Newcastle squad can match him.
