Garth Crooks gives verdict on Liverpool ace Thiago

Garth Crooks has told his BBC Sport Team of the Week that Liverpool star Thiago has never “convinced” him, citing the midfielder’s “lack of pace”.

Thiago, 30, has endured a tricky start to life at Liverpool. Joining the club from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020, he has only played 40 times.

Indeed, the 46-time Spain international has struggled with numerous injuries. One of those was as a result of a bad tackle from Richarlison.

Now though, Thiago is back to his best and with Liverpool struggling with injuries – he sparkled in midfield against Southampton, during a 4-0 win.

Crooks outlined his doubts over Thiago since his move to English football – but picked him in his team of the week, praising his Saturday outing.

“The Spaniard has never totally convinced me he has acclimatised to the Premier League intensity,” Crooks said. “There is no doubt he can play.

“But when the game becomes physical or hectic I often feel his lack of pace limits his ability to engage and the game starts to pass him by.

“He’s masterful on the ball and has the most velvet touch. But Liverpool need the occasional rottweiler (enforcer) in midfield and that, he is not.”

The Reds are on fire at the moment, and Thiago is becoming more and more crucial to the way Jurgen Klopp has got it his side working on all cylinders.

Not only has the Italian-born midfielder produced some excellent performances of late, but of course, he has now also scored two in two.

He is becoming more and more effective in a Liverpool shirt. Indeed, his first two league starts since September were against Arsenal and the Saints.

Two 4-0 wins. Liverpool are on fire, Thiago is rediscovering his best form – and adding goals at the same time. Liverpool are surely title favourites.
