Garth Crooks delivers honest verdict on Arsenal star Nuno Tavares, after Newcastle win
Nuno Tavares was a surprise inclusion in Arsenal’s starting line-up against Newcastle on Saturday – but he has earned praise from Garth Crooks.
The summer signing was guilty of an awful mistake against Liverpool the previous weekend, gifting possession to the Reds for Jota to score.
It was widely expected that with Kieran Tierney on the bench, the Scottish ace would come in for Tavares. However, Mikel Arteta chose Tavares.
It was a decision that paid off, with the £8million (Independent) star shining at left-back against the Toon. A comprehensive win for Arsenal on Saturday.
Bukayo Saka and substitute Gabriel Martinelli got the goals, but Crooks was full of praise for Tavares – naming the ace in his BBC team of the week.
“This kid had passed me by, but he’s certainly on my radar now. I’ve always admired full-backs who are not afraid to have an impact on the game.”
“If Tavares wasn’t running with the ball he was trying to put one of his team-mates through on goal. The assist for Saka’s goal was quite brilliant.”
Crooks on Tavares: Arsenal man keeps his place for Old Trafford
Tavares joined Arsenal in the summer with many simply expecting him to be Tierney’s back up. He was to begin with, Tierney started the first eight.
But after his ankle injury, Tavares has jumped at the chance to show what he is capable of. It has seen Tierney left on the bench three games in a row.
While Tavares will have done enough to earn his place against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Thursday – the competition is high.
One more mistake like his Liverpool one, and Tavares will know that he will be axed for Tierney. It is whether Tavares can remain consistent.
