BBC pundit Garth Crooks has used his team of the week to select Manchester City starlet Phil Foden this time around, and gave the England man a glowing reference in doing so.
Foden was left out of the first XI as City romped to another win at Newcastle United yesterday. However, he played a big role in the 7-0 hammering of Leeds and has been a key player for Pep Guardiola’s side all season.
The young midfielder has quickly become one of Pep’s most trusted players. He’s begun adding goals to his game more as well, and already has six this season, along with six assists.

And speaking about Foden in his latest team of the week selection, Crooks believes the Manchester City man is reminiscent of a certain Barcelona legend.
“I’ve compared Foden with Arsenal’s Saka and Chelsea’s Mason Mount in the past. Both English players who are developing just as fast and every bit as good as the City player,” Crooks wrote.
“However, under Guardiola’s influence I see a young Andres Iniesta emerging and the kind of player who, in time, will prove to be an extraordinary asset to City – if he isn’t one already.”
City will spend Christmas top of the Premier League table. Liverpool, after drawing 2-2 with Tottenham, are their nearest challengers.
TBR’s View: Phil Foden Is World Class Already
Few young players in world football can boast the talent that Foden does. He is simply superb and on his day, one of the very best midfielders in the world.
Luckily for England, he is theirs. Going forward, it’s hard to see Gareth Southgate not building his team around Foden and his City teammate, Jack Grealish. Both are playing well, and both improving all the time under Guardiola.
City now have one hand on the title already you feel. And with Foden and others driving them on, it’s hard to see who is realistically going to stop them.
