Garth Crooks blown away by Manchester City star John Stones

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks raved about Manchester City star John Stones and named him in his Team of the Week after a 3-0 win over Fulham at the weekend.

Stones scored his fifth goal of the season as the Citizens edged a step closer to regaining their Premier League title.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been in truly sensational form and they were once again at their devastating best at Craven Cottage.

The England defender has earned a reprieve this season after spending the summer being linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium.

Crooks was mightily impressed with his showing at the weekend and took time to wax lyrical about the centre-back.

He told BBC Sport: “It may have been his fifth goal of the campaign but that doesn’t tell the whole story about the season John Stones is having.

“I’ve seen lots of goals scored but not by a centre-back with the composure to attack a ball that sat up and finish like a striker.

“Stones is so full of confidence at the moment, it’s scary. The response from his Manchester City teammates, I’m convinced was largely because of the sheer quality of the finish.”

TBR View: Stones transformation is remarkable

Last summer, you needed two hands to count the clubs interested in taking Stones from City.

Arsenal were linked, Tottenham wanted him and even a move back to Everton was on the cards.

At one point it felt as though every day a new club emerged as interested parties in the race to sign Stones.

The £100,000-a-week ace didn’t go anywhere, however, with Guardiola throwing him a City lifeline.

Stones, 26, has played 18 Premier League games this season, striking up a phenomenal partnership with Ruben Dias.

City are set to waltz to the Premier League title and a return to the England fold looks nailed on for the defender.
