Jamaal Lascelles has earned a place in Garth Crooks’ team of the week after scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Lascelles headed in the opener for Newcastle in the 1-1 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He also helped keep things tight towards the end of the game when 10-man Newcastle were hanging on.
Crooks has hailed Lascelles’ role in Newcastle’s ‘resurgence’. Crooks believes the former Nottingham Forest defender has been ‘quite brilliant’ with his leadership this season.
Crooks on Lascelles
In his blurb about Lascelles on the BBC website, Crooks said: “After a poor start to the season Newcastle responded to some very sharp criticism. Their performance away at Spurs was probably the catalyst to their resurgence.
“Leadership has been the key both on and off the pitch. Jamaal Lascelles has been quite brilliant in that department for Newcastle. He takes responsibility in defence and is not afraid to attack in the opponent’s box.”
I’m not sure about this so-called ‘resurgence’ that Crooks mentions. Since that Tottenham win, Newcastle have lost four times and won just one more game.
But Lascelles has been the lynchpin at the back under Steve Bruce. While his form is not always at its best, his commitment and leadership cannot be questioned. He will be an important player if Newcastle are sucked into a relegation battle.
