Leeds United now have a mountain to climb if they are to make their way into the automatic promotion places in the Championship. Defeat to Brentford at the weekend leaves Sheffield United in the driving seat.
The final nail in the coffin came from Spanish midfielder Sergi Canos. Him playing a part in their demise certainly has some levels of irony, considering he could have been a Leeds player.
It was Garry Monk who wanted the former Liverpool youngster at Elland Road.

Back in January 2017, Leeds were heavily linked with a move to bring the Spaniard to West Yorkshire. The midfield creator was a target for Garry Monk, who was a big fan of the former Liverpool trainee. As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds had been in contact with Norwich regarding a move for the player, with an asking price of £2.5 million mooted.
That never happened, with Canos instead heading to former loan club Brentford. Monk himself, was gone at the end of the season and Canos became a former target.
“A lot of people compare us with them [Barcelona]. Barcelona is Barcelona but Brentford is Brentford. The counter-pressing, moving the ball quick, wide players giving width.
“It is basically the same. We are all different but we try to play good football. It is great for us; I don’t think anyone – maybe Leeds – plays like we play.”
The player himself, however, admitted that Leeds play the best style of football in the Championship earlier this season when talking to The Guardian.
Now, it seems that the Spaniard may have helped ensure that Leeds remain in the Championship next season.
