What did Garry Monk have to say about Leeds United newbie last season?

Leeds United finally got their hands on a striker this week, with Patrick Bamford arriving from Middlesbrough. The £7 million attacker joins on a four-year deal and will be tasked with getting the goals needed for a Leeds promotion push.

One man who seems to be a fan of the player is former Leeds boss Garry Monk. The current Birmingham City manager was with Bamford at Middlesbrough last season. The striker often struggled to win over Monk, with other options available to the former Leeds manager.

But after shining in a December clash with Ipswich Town, Monk was overtly positive about the player’s attitude and ability. However, he also suggested he needed to become more consistent:

“There are always ups and downs. This is what I expect. If I don’t see this then you won’t be in the team. That’s what I expect from all my players. That’s the best way to work with them.

“Patrick’s response was exactly what we are looking for. The hardest part for him maybe is now because he needs to stay at that level and prove he can do it.”

Bamford had been praised earlier in the season by Monk but had also struggled to stay in his first-team plans.

It was only after Monk left that Bamford found his best form, including a run of eight goals in five games throughout February and March.

Which is why his departure has come as something of a surprise to many. Leeds fans, however, will just hope they get the best of Bamford. On his day, as Monk alluded to, he can be extremely lethal.

He just has to produce it on a consistent basis.
