Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a deal for Swansea city winger Jefferson Montero. The Sun on Sunday (13/01/2019; pg 59) reported this weekend that the Ecuadorian was a potential loan target for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
Leeds are known to be looking for a replacement for Samuel Saiz and it appears Montero is now one option being considered.
If the words of one former Leeds United boss are anything to go by, he would be a great recruit.
When Swansea first snapped up Montero in 2014 he went on to be a regular starter in the Premier League. The man who brought him to these shores was former Leeds boss Garry Monk.
Montero was a regular at the Liberty Stadium under the former Leeds man, who spent one season in the Elland Road dugout before leaving and taking the Middlesbrough job.
During that time he made quite the impression on Monk. As he explained in August 2015, Monk felt he was the best one-on-one winger in the Premier League at that time.
“For me, Jeff is probably the best in the league in one-on-one situations. I haven’t seen anyone create so many opportunities by beating his man.
“He is relentless, he doesn’t give defenders any peace and that is what we encourage him to do.”
Montero was certainly impressive in his early days at Swansea but his form and regularity have been patchy in recent times.
However, Monk would clearly back the move. If Bielsa does the same, then Montero might be a shrewd piece of business from Leeds United this summer.
