Middlesbrough fans probably cannot believe their eyes at reports coming out of Spain this morning. It appears as though former Boro attacker Cristhian Stuani could be set to join Barcelona.

As reported by AS, the Uruguayan has been picked as the striking reinforcement for Boro after weeks of rumours regarding who might head to the Nou Camp to play this role.

Munir El Haddadi’s recent exit to Sevilla has necessitated a need to speed up the process and Stuani is the man they want.

A reported €15 million (£13.3 million) fee will be paid to secure his signature from Girona.

His form in Spain since leaving Middlesbrough certainly deserves it. Playing centrally he has starred in La Liga. He scored 21 goals last season and has 12 already this term.

So Middlesbrough fans are right to be annoyed at Garry Monk this morning. He is the man that decided to sell Stuani in 2017. This was despite his good form in the Championship under Aitor Karanka. He struggled for his best performances in the Premier League but was often used out wide.

Monk decided to let him go and most Boro fans wished him well. Nobody, however, including Monk, would have predicted him being one of La Liga’s most feared strikers and on the brink of a Barcelona transfer just 18 months later.
