Garry Monk comments on how Leeds have changed since his tenure

In comments reported on Sheffield Wednesday’s official Twitter account, Garry Monk has suggested a big difference between the current Leeds United side and the club from when he was in charge at Elland Road.

Monk spent one season at the helm at Leeds. And it is fair to say that he did a very good job. He came closer to guiding the Whites to promotion than any Leeds boss since Simon Grayson.

It surprised and disappointed many when it was announced that he had left after that first season. But Leeds have ultimately ended up in a much stronger position.

They initially took a few step backwards under Thomas Christiansen and Paul Heckingbottom. But Marcelo Bielsa’s tenure has seen Leeds become one of the division’s heavyweights on the pitch.

And ahead of their game with his former club this weekend, Owls boss Monk commented on how the team are benefitting from being in a better position behind the scenes…

Leeds in a better position

Monk did have to deal with some uncertainty during his time in charge. Leeds were moving out of the Massimo Cellino era and into Andrea Radrizzani’s time in charge.

Radrizzani has made mistakes during his time in Yorkshire. But there is surely no doubt that the Whites look to be in a much better position now than they were when Monk left.

And while the appointments of Christiansen and Heckingbottom did not work out, the large majority of Leeds fans will be somewhat glad that those spells took place as they ultimately led to Bielsa coming in ahead of last season.
