Gareth Southgate to leave Arsenal star out of England XI tonight - report
Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale is in the England squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Andorra and Hungary.
The Gunners summer signing is yet to win his first cap for the Three Lions, despite making the bench for most of their games at Euro 2020.
Tonight, England face Andorra, a good shout for Southgate to drop first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford and start Ramsdale.
But a report in The Athletic predicts that Southgate will choose West Brom’s Sam Johnstone to start at the Estadi Nacional instead.
The Athletic also claims Pickford will return against Hungary, suggesting Ramsdale’s wait for his England debut is set to continue.
Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United for a fee which could reportedly rise to £30million.
His arrival at the Emirates was met with a mixed reaction by Gunners fans, but he’s very quickly won them over.
Ramsdale has overtaken Bernd Leno as Arsenal’s first-choice stopper, and has conceded just once in five competitive Gunners matches.
That said, Johnstone has also done well, keeping four clean sheets in 10 league appearances en route to second in the Championship.
The 28-year-old has won two England caps and is yet to concede for the Three Lions.
On one hand, a player not taking to the pitch for his country lessens the risk of suffering an injury during a game.
That said, it would be nice for Ramsdale to finally make his England debut, and if The Athletic report is true, it looks like he’ll have to wait a while longer.
