Gareth Southgate says player reportedly wanted by Liverpool is absolutely 'phenomenal'
Reported Liverpool target Jude Bellingham is a “phenomenal” player, according to England manager Gareth Southgate.
It’s not been a great season for the Reds given the amount of injuries they’ve had to deal with.
However, Liverpool were able to finish strongly and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
Jurgen Klopp will need to address Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure and potentially source a replacement.
And Bellingham is on Liverpool’s radar as a potential summer target, according to Eurosport.
The 17-year-old has made 46 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions this season.
In addition, England have given Bellingham two caps already, and he’s in Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad.
The £25million man made the cut ahead of Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard and Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.
In his press conference on Tuesday, Southgate hinted that Bellingham will have a significant role to play at Euro 2020.
“Jude is phenomenal,” Southgate told talkSPORT.
“Just in training in the last couple of days, to have a 17-year-old, who wants to compete with senior players, not only has the technique, but the competitiveness and maturity… he’s a hugely exciting player.
“He’s going to be an important player for England. We’re not just taking him for the experience.
“The experience is going to be enormous for him and for future England managers because I don’t see anything in his character that means he won’t succeed.
“But his performance levels with Dortmund in the big Champions League games were the things that really struck us.
“He stood up in those big moments. They are the moments we’re really assessing the players on.”
Bellingham has enjoyed a superb season for Dortmund, clocking up close to 50 competitive appearances.
This includes 29 in the Bundesliga and 10 in the Champions League, which is staggering for a 17-year-old.
However, given his age, potential and long contract, Liverpool must be prepared to spend a lot of money.
Eurosport has even suggested that £100million is not “too ridiculous” an estimate.
