Gareth Southgate says he was not very happy when Yunus Musah picked USMNT over England

After Yunus Musah left Arsenal to join Valencia, the talented youngster had to make a decision about his international future – England boss Gareth Southgate is not too happy about his choice.

The now 19-year-old spent seven years as a Gunner back in the day. He came through the ranks at Hale End, but in 2019, his agent convinced him to reject Arsenal’s contract offer and move to Spain.

Now, he’s a regular for Valencia and USA.

Gareth Southgate says he was not very happy when Yunus Musah picked USMNT over England

Musah is one of the most talented young players in the world and multiple countries wanted him to represent them.

He had the choice of the United States, Ghana, Italy and England, and Southgate and co were hoping he’d pick the Three Lions having already represented the country at youth level in five different age groups.

Musah, however, decided to go with the USMNT instead, and their manager, Gregg Berhalter seems to have played a huge part in that decision. That’s something Southgate says he’s not too happy about.

When asked what has impressed him about Berhalter, Southgate said, as quoted by Express and Star: “Well, firstly, they have been very proactive on recruitment if you like, talent identification.

“Obviously they took one of ours (Musah), which we weren’t very happy about but, fair play!

“With Yunus, it was a strange situation because he was in our Under-19s and we went into the pandemic and lockdown so it wasn’t possible to travel and see games so he was a player that at that stage I had not had a lot of contact with in the junior teams.

“One or two of the others I knew a little bit better and that decision was made before I had the chance to get to know him well.”

Musah is a tremendous talent, there’s no doubt about that.

The teenager, branded as a ‘stunning’ footballer by FourFourTwo, started the USMNT’s opening game at the World Cup against Wales earlier this week, and he wasn’t bad at all. He’s still only 19 and has the world at his feet, and he’ll only get better in the coming months and years.

Musah could’ve been a star for England, but choosing the United States has given him the opportunity to become a regular at international level – that may not have been possible if he had picked England.

In a few years’ time, however, the Three Lions and Arsenal may both end up regretting that he doesn’t play for them.
