Gareth Southgate lauds Everton star Jordan Pickford for 'outstanding' Euro 2020
Everton star Jordan Pickford has been lauded by Gareth Southgate for having what he called an ‘outstanding’ Euro 2020 campaign.
The Toffees stopper has come under pressure in the past. Going into the tournament, there had even been calls for the likes of Dean Henderson or Sam Johnstone to replace Pickford.
But the former Sunderland man stood tall in the end. He conceded just the two tournament goals, with only one from open play.
And Southgate, speaking in his press conference today following the game, was full of praise for Pickford and his efforts.
“I thought he had a brilliant tournament. There are a lot of players in the category,” Southgate said.
“The number of times I’ve sat here and his place is questioned. He’s constantly delivered for us and this tournament was his best run of performances for England. He should be hugely proud of that.
“He could do little more in terms of keeping the ball out of our net and he had a really outstanding tournament.”
Pickford saves two penalties against Italy but it wasn’t enough as Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Raheem Sterling all missed from 12 yards.
There is no doubt now that Pickford is England’s number one. Even an outstanding campaign next year from the likes of Henderson, Ramsdale, or Johnstone, will probably not be enough for the Everton man to be dislodged.
He stepped up to the plate when he was needed and although he could do little about both goals, you know he’ll be analysing if he could have done better.
Pickford was, as Southgate says, a standout performer. Everton fans, then, will be hoping he can bring that form back to Goodison.
