Luke O’Nien came off the bench for Sunderland last night and scored a goal which wrapped up three points.

It was O’Nien’s first goal at The Stadium of Light and it restored Sunderland’s two-goal cushion late on against Barnsley.

Sunderland had led 3-0 in the first half but a Kieffer Moore double brought Barnsley back into the game.

With the Tykes dominant and pushing for an equaliser, O’Nien was on hand to kill them off.

Aiden McGeady – who was also excellent – teed the 24-year-old up to provide the finishing touch with 83 minutes on the clock.

O’Nien’s lively display came after he changed the game against Walsall last weekend.

Ten-man Sunderland were 2-0 down when O’Nien came on, inspiring a comeback as the game ended 2-2.

Sunderland fans were effusive in their praise for their new hero.

The former Wycombe Wanderers man is starting to show his talent to the supporters after a slow start.

With impressive performances on the pitch and commendable actions off the field, O’Nien is becoming a fans’ favourite at The Stadium of Light.

Below are some tweets from Sunderland fans discussing his goal scoring cameo.
