‘Game-changer’: Alan Shearer names the one signing that turned Newcastle United’s fortunes around… it’s not Bruno Guimaraes

Alan Shearer has named the one Newcastle United signing that turned the club’s fortunes around on TalkSPORT today and it’s not Bruno Guimaraes – it’s Kieran Trippier

Trippier made the switch to St James’ Park from Atletico Madrid back in January for a £12 million fee (Sky Sports).

The 32-year-old was coming off the back of winning La Liga under Diego Simeone and joined the Magpies when they were sitting 19th in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe steered Newcastle to an 11th-placed finish in the end and Shearer feels the signing of Trippier was a ‘game-changer’ for the club.

Shearer on Tripper

Speaking to TalkSPORT today, Shearer thinks the signing of Trippier is what attracted other players to the club.

He said: “Kieran Trippier for me was a key signing. He was a game-changer with his attitude and everything else, with his ability and his leadership qualities.

“When you remember what he’s achieved and what he’s won as a player, for him to choose Newcastle, who were in a real chance of getting relegated, was a big decision. I think that then attracted others to the football club, so he got them safe last year.”

The Magpies secured another big signing during the window in Guimaraes, as he made the switch from Lyon.

The Brazilian midfielder made an instant impact and helped Howe’s men finish comfortably above the relegation zone.

Guimaraes has been a revelation for Newcastle and has continued his fine form into the new season.

Trippier only managed to make six Premier League appearances last season after fracturing his metatarsal. But the Englishman has been in brilliant form this season and been a standout performer under Howe.

Newcastle are certainly flying high at the moment and sit third in the Premier League table after an impressive run of form.

Howe’s side haven’t lost a game since the end of August, which was a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.
