Gallas makes claim about Arteta as Arsenal manager
William Gallas has told The Sun that the Arsenal board made a mistake appointing Mikel Arteta as manager back in 2019.
Arteta endured a difficult first full season at the helm at the Emirates. The Gunners finished eighth in the Premier League.
They also missed out on a place in the Europa League final as Arteta was beaten by the man he succeeded in North London.
Of course, it was never going to be a simple task for the Spaniard. Arsenal have found themselves out of the title picture in the Premier League for a number of years now.
But you can understand why some supporters may have their doubts about the 39-year-old.
Gallas has backed the retired midfielder to go on and become a superb manager in the future. However, he suggested that he has not proved to be the right person for Arsenal in their current situation.
“Mikel Arteta was not ready yet to manage a club like Arsenal,” he told The Sun.
“OK, he was assistant coach at Manchester City. But he had never managed a team. It is completely different.
“The board made a mistake picking him. I’m sure he will be a great manager but you need to have experience to manage a big club.”
Arsenal may well look for a new manager if Arteta starts slowly next year
There have been times this past season when fans have seemingly expected Arteta’s departure to be announced.
He has impressed at times. But the pressure will surely be on if he cannot hit the ground running next season.
Another campaign like this past one would not go down well with supporters by any means.
There is still plenty of work to be done at the Emirates. Arteta really needs to quickly show that he is the right person for it.
