Gaetano Berardi not thinking about his Leeds United future with contract expiry looming

Leeds United fan favourite Gaetano Berardi has been asked about his future at the club and the Swiss strongman has made it clear he is not currently thinking that far ahead.

The defender has become a firm cult hero among the Elland Road faithful for his tough-tackling no-nonsense impact on the pitch and his acerbic personality off of it.

Under Marcelo Bielsa, he has become a key utility player at the back, able to play centrally or in either full-back role.

Speaking earlier in the season, after Berardi was unfairly red-carded against Millwall, the Argentine backed the ‘loyal’ player, stating ‘he gives everything on the pitch’ in conversation with Leeds Live.

However, the 31-year-old is out of contract at the end of the month and although he has agreed to play until the Championship season is done, any agreement after that is not yet in place.

But speaking to Leeds United’s official website, Berardi was clearly not bothered by the issue. Instead, he put his current situation into perspective when considering the current state of affairs around the world.

“I don’t know, I just want to finish the season as best we can. There are bigger things to do before I think about my future.”

Indeed, Leeds United fans will be wondering if Berardi is seen as Premier League quality. If not, it could be that the club decide not to keep him on board should they win promotion in the weeks to come.

Back in December, speaking to BBC Radio Leeds, Berardi admitted he ‘did not know the plan’ regarding his future and it seems Leeds might be playing it by ear regarding their situation come the end of the season.

But no doubt Leeds United fans would love to see their committed Swiss hero get a new deal for 2020-21.
