Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi has broken his silence on Instagram after it was confirmed that he had picked up a long-term knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the majority of next season.

Berardi, 31, has earned fan-favourite status at Leeds since joining the club back in 2014 and clocking up 155 appearances in all competitions for the Whites. Despite being back-up, he has remained loyal under Marcelo Bielsa.

His future was in doubt at Elland Road this summer with his contract due to expire when the season finishes. Leeds face Charlton Athletic in their final match of the Championship campaign, who are managed by Lee Bowyer.

It was believed that plans were being put in place to extend Berardi – a one-time Switzerland international – a new contract to remain at Elland Road for at least the next 12 months. But those plans are seemingly on ice.

Berardi is now unexpected to return to training until April next year, and it could mean that the former Sampdoria man has played his last game for the Championship title-winners. Whether Leeds offer a deal remains to be seen.

But the versatile defender broke his silence on Instagram, thanking supporters for their messages and support, stating that he could not be at a better club in Leeds United.
