Gael Clichy wants to see Mikel Arteta use Arsenal’s ‘super talent’ more often now

Arsenal ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Atletico Madrid on a famous Champions League night at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night – and one star labelled a ‘super talent’ has impressed former star Gael Clichy.

Arsenal were somewhat impressive in the first half against Diego Simeone’s side, but couldn’t find the breakthrough as they aimed for a third-consecutive Champions League win.

However, Gabriel’s header just before the hour mark triggered a chain of goals for Mikel Arteta’s side, with four in just 13 minutes coming via the Brazilian defender, his compatriot Gabriel Martinelli and a three-minute brace from summer signing Viktor Gyokeres.

But it was one homegrown star who caught Gael Clichy’s eye, calling on Myles Lewis-Skelly to be given more minutes after his incredible assist.

Gael Clichy calls Myles Lewis-Skelly ‘unbelievable’ after Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid performance

Shortly after Arsenal went 1-0 up, Lewis-Skelly picked the ball up at centre-back and burst his way past four Atletico players to the edge of the box.

Laying the ball off for Gabriel Martinelli to double the Gunners’ lead, it saw him massively praised for showing flair and bravery to create something from nothing.

And Gael Clichy has joined the list of growing admirers in the left-back, urging Arsenal to play their youth academy product more to reap the rewards of his performances.

He said on Amazon Prime Video’s coverage of the game: “We discussed about the choice of Mikel [Arteta] putting [Myles] Lewis-Skelly or putting [Riccardo] Calafiori in.

“And I think that’s the reason because he gives you a different option. He gives you the wide option. Like Theo [Walcott] said, I think you know the first part of the goal is unbelievable, but the final pass is probably the hardest weight of that pass.

“Beautiful. And hopefully, this will allow him to get more minutes, he’s a super talent.”

It will certainly give Mikel Arteta a selection headache going into the campaign where he’ll hope his Gunners side can finally win a piece of silverware.

Lewis-Skelly has not had as many minutes as Riccardo Calafiori despite rapid rise

Myles Lewis-Skelly hasn’t featured much for Arsenal this season, and Tuesday’s outing was a rare start for the teenager.

He started the home clash against Greek side Olympiacos the round prior, though that was following a tough run of Premier League games that Riccardo Calafiori had played in. Calafiori has earned praise for his Arsenal performances this season and at times, he has looked undroppable.

The only other game Lewis-Skelly featured in was the routine 2-0 Carabao Cup win over Port Vale, in which he recorded an assist.

The signs have been there for a clamour to start, having only played in the Premier League for 83 minutes so far this campaign.

But his incredible performance against the Spanish giants will undoubtedly give Mikel Arteta food for thought when it comes to the next few weeks.

Lewis-Skelly has broken into the England team already, and at the age of just 19, Lewis-Skelly has been praised by Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer for his rapid rise.
