Gael Clichy thinks Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero would be a good fit at Arsenal

Gael Clichy has told Stadium Astro that he believes Sergio Aguero would be a good fit for Arsenal ahead of the summer window, with Manchester City confirming that the Argentine goal machine will be leaving The Etihad in the coming months.

Aguero, 32, was handed a second consecutive start for Pep Guardiola’s side on Saturday evening during a 2-0 win over Leicester City – just days after it was confirmed Aguero would leave. His contract is due to expire at City on June 30.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have options up top with Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah all providing options. But Lacazette and Nketiah have been linked with a summer exit, while Aubameyang is struggling.

Ex-Arsenal and City defender Clichy believes that if Aguero is to remain in the Premier League, then Arsenal might be his best-suited club to join – but is of the opinion that Aguero will leave England altogether and probably return to Spain.

“I could see him staying in the Premier League, because he will want to climb to third or second [in the all-time top goalscorers charts],” Clichy said. “Does he want that? 10 years with City is enough, I think he will move where he can enjoy a bit more.

“He loves the sun. I would like to see him stay [in England] to get to second or third in goals, but I think he will move. I think Arsenal is a good fit, in terms of style of play. They play nice football, but I really doubt he would go there. Spain probably.”

TBR’s view – Would Aguero be tempted with a move to Arsenal?

Well, if they are going to get him – then they desperately need to qualify for the Champions League and the only way they can do that is by winning the Europa League. Then, it is about convincing Aguero. He currently earns £230,000 a week (Spotrac).

Willian is on enormous wages, as is Aubameyang and perhaps offloading one of those two struggling players in order to finance a move for Aguero would make sense. Would he join another English team? Probably not, but if anyone could – Arsenal can.
