Gabriel Magalhaes would be a good Jan Vertonghen replacement at Tottenham

Jan Vertonghen’s career at Tottenham Hotspur appears to be coming to an end.

The central defender has been in poor form this season, and he was hooked shortly after half time against Southampton in the club’s FA Cup fourth-round replay on Wednesday.

Vertonghen looked dismayed as he trudged off, and speculation regarding his future has been rife since.

The 118-cap Belgium international is out of contract in the summer, but a new deal seems highly unlikely at this stage.

Everything is pointing to a departure after eight years at the club, and Spurs will have a difficult task trying to replace a fantastic servant.

One man they could turn to though, is an individual who has recently been linked with Arsenal (Le10 Sport).

TBR’s view – Gabriel a good long-term replacement?

Spurs should strongly consider making a move for the Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

If Spurs are bidding goodbye to Vertonghen, then it’d probably be in their interests to sign a left-footed replacement to help with the balance of things.

Gabriel, still only 22, is a strong aerial presence, with WhoScored reporting he has averaged 3.4 aerial duels per 90 so far this season in Ligue 1 – by contrast, Vertonghen as averaged 2.9.

Gabriel is set to cost potential suitors in the region on £30 million (The Sun), which seemingly represents decent value for a player who is not only comfortable in possession, but a solid, no-nonsense defender just like Vertonghen has been over the years.
