Former Aston Villa striker, Gabby Agbonlahor, has backed the Villans to beat the drop this season, despite their inconsistent form.

The ex-Villa forward was speaking on Radio 5 Live ahead of the Villans’ clash with Spurs next weekend.

After reaching the final of the League Cup, things were looking up for Dean Smith’s men. However, a critical loss against Bournemouth last weekend left Villa down in 17th – just one point above the bottom three.

But Agbonlahor believes he has seen enough in recent weeks to suggest his former club will stay up.

“From watching them in recent weeks –  I was at the Watford game – I was excited to see them fight until the end“, he said.

“Their heads didn’t drop. Villa Park can be a tough place to play at a goal down. But their heads didn’t drop and they’re going to big stadiums and getting results as well.

“They’re fighting to the end. From what I’ve seen this season so far and the consistency their top players are showing, I’m more than confident they can stay up”.

Villa will be hoping the League Cup final can propel them to a run in the Premier League. Indeed, they’ve won just twice on the bounce all season.

That was against Norwich and Brighton back in October. Coincidentally, they’re two of the teams they are now scrapping for survival with.

All or nothing for Villa – TBR View

Aston Villa went for it in the summer…big time!

Dean Smith brought in a wealth of new players and spent a hefty chunk of money in the process. Some of those players, like Matt Targett and Tyrone Mings, have done well.

However, the likes of Wesley, Trezeguet, and Douglas Luiz have hardly performed consistently.

Furthermore, injuries to the likes of John McGinn have been vital. McGinn was in fine form, driving the Villans from midfield before disaster struck.

Agbonlahor might be confident in his former team. But their form shows they struggle to get results consistently.

That in itself is a worry and could, ultimately, be their downfall.
