‘Future Spurs baller’: Some fans love who Jose Mourinho has named in tonight’s matchday squad

A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have taken to Twitter to congratulate Spurs academy star Dilan Markanday for making the matchday squad for tonight’s Europa League clash.

Markanday has come through the ranks at Tottenham and is currently playing for the Under-23s, having made 12 appearances and scoring once this season.

The teenager also scored in the first ever game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, netting the third for the club’s Under-18s in a 3-1 win over Southampton U18s.

As per the Spurs website, Markanday is a clever attacking midfielder who is normally deployed on the right wing, though he can play on the left and as a No. 10.

He was a key member of the side that finished as runners-up in the Under-18 Premier League in 2018-19, playing in more games in that competition – 21 of our 22 – than any other player and scoring 11 goals.

Markanday was also named “Best Overseas Player” at the Under-17 Borgaro Maggioni Righi tournament in Italy over the Easter weekend in 2018, and made his Under-23s debut as a substitute in a Premier League 2 final-day defeat to Manchester City.

Tottenham face Wolfsberger in their Europa League last-32 second leg tonight and, ahead of the game, Mourinho confirmed that Markanday would be on the bench along with three other Spurs academy stars.

“(Dane) Scarlett is again going to be on the bench, Marcel Lavinier also on the bench, Nile (John) on the bench, quite a beautiful story as he arrived at the club almost as a baby,” said the manager.

“Also Dilan (Markanday) on the bench. It’s great for the kids to be involved and, if possible, to get some minutes would be even better.”

And some Spurs fans were delighted to see Markanday both in first-team training and in the matchday squad, expressing their joy on social media:
