‘Fully deserved’, ‘Worthy every penny’: Some Liverpool fans react to report on exit-bound star

Some Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media to reports by De Telegraaf discussing what Paris Saint-Germain offered Georginio Wijnaldum.

The Dutch international will join the Ligue 1 giants on a free transfer once his Liverpool contract expires. Wijnaldum leaves Anfield after five years with his deal lapsing at the end of the month.

Wijnaldum had held talks to join Barcelona as a free agent, but PSG blew the Catalan outfit out of the water with their offer. Mauricio Pochettino’s side are prepared to pay the midfielder €10million-a-year (£165k-p/w) to see that he moves to the Parc des Princes.

Barcelona simply cannot afford to match, let alone better, PSG’s offer and risk missing out on the 30-year-old. Wijnaldum has been earning £90k-p/w at Liverpool since joining from Newcastle United for £25m (BBC) in 2016.

Celtic fans left short-changed by Sky Sports once again

Pochettino is delighted to welcome the Jurgen Klopp favourite to Paris. Wijnaldum will now sign a three-year contract. Technical Director Leonardo also worked tooth and nail to seal the 75-cap international’s arrival after weeks of talks.

Wijnaldum’s agent had also met with Barcelona representatives and scheduled a medical at the Camp Nou, per ESPN. But the La Liga giant’s offer was worth half what PSG tabled. A personal call from Pochettino also helped to wrap up a deal.

Liverpool fans react to PSG’s Wijnaldum contract offer

Not every Liverpool fan is happy to see PSG nearing a deal for Wijnaldum, however. That’s because some feel Klopp’s side should have done more to retain the central midfielder who occupied a prominent role.

Wijnaldum started 34 of his 38 Premier League appearances and only sat out two games across all competitions last term. He also captained the side in the absence of Jordan Henderson on several occasions.

Some Liverpool fans now feel Wijnaldum is set to earn what he has deserved for years. While others argue PSG are set to pay over the odds for a player who turns 31 in November.
