Although the headlines following Fulham’s devastating defeat to then-bottom of the league Cardiff City were dominated by reports of managerial uncertainity and their porous defence, one encouraging storyline has been largely ignored.

Fulham’s 18-year-old phenom Ryan Sessegnon bagged his first Premier League goal on Saturday, becoming the first player born after 2000 to score in the top flight.

The left winger’s debut strike is a massive achievement and deserves to be celebrated, marking the first of many Premier League goals for the outstanding finisher.

Sessegnon’s goal came in classic circumstances for the youngtser. Calum Chambers’ early ball in from the right found Aleksandar Mitrovic, who spotted the superb run of the 18-year-old flawlessly and coolly slipped Sessegnon through.

Under heavy pressure from the Cardiff defender, Sessegnon showed immense strength and pace to race to the ball first and then brilliantly slide the ball past the onrushing Neil Etheridge and into the bottom corner.

The goal had it all: exquisite awareness, searing pace, and lethal finishing from a player who is showing nous well beyond his tender years. The strike will come as a much-needed confidence boost for the English U-21 international, who has struggled at times to adapt to the speed of the top flight.

But with his first Premier League goal under his belt, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon can push on and build on his impressive achievement throughout the Cottagers’ season.
